As a child, I remember fighting with my sisters over who would get to sit in the front seat if we were traveling any distance with mom or dad. I'm sure that more often than not, my older sister won that fight, and I was stuck in the back seat. Today, my kids know that the oldest kid gets the front seat (and more often than not, one of the two older ones is driving).
I wonder if Jesus shook His head as He listened to His disciples argue over who was the greatest (Luke 9:46). For three years He had taught them; He knew their hearts, yet they were still divided. The sin principle was prevalent and the self-nature was being shown in their actions and attitudes.
What the disciples needed to do was to give up their own agendas, crucify self-centeredness, and be filled with the empowering Spirit of God. To be willing, as we talked this week, to take up our cross and deny ourselves and follow Him (Mark 8:34).
His plan for His disciples hasn't changed. We are still called to surrender our will to His and allow Him to lead. It still requires us to surrender selfish wants and desires for His, and allow Him to lead as He sees best, to accomplish His purpose through us. He has called us to work together to accomplish this, using our gifts as He has given them, to best fulfill His mission.
